The rainbow-like sheen in rainbow obsidian is due to magnetite inclusions and gas bubbles contained within the obsidian can produce a golden sheen as seen in sheen obsidian. It is said that an ancient Roman explorer named Obsius found a stone, obsianus lapis in Ethiopia that resembles obsidian and when obsidian was discovered it was named after obsianus lapis.
