Nephrite is a variety of actinolite that is mainly greens and grays and on occasion yellows, browns or whites. The second species is jadeite jade. Jadeite jade can also contain blacks, reds, pinks, and violets. Nephrite’s history dates back over 7,000 years and has been prized in Chinese and Latin American cultures. In pre-historic China it was used in everyday items as well as in elaborate burial suits and at one time was considered the “Imperial Gem”. Though, traditional Chinese jade typically refers to nephrite jade since there is no actual jadeite jade deposits located in China. In China jade is believed to bring the wearer health, long life and general good luck. Its name has a history rooted in Greek, Latin, and Spanish. From the Spanish, ‘jade’ was derived from 'Piedra de Ijada', a Spanish phrase meaning 'stone for the pain in the side'. From the Greek 'nephrite' was derived from the word for 'kidney', because it was believed to cure kidney disease.
