Sandrose is an evaporate mineral that is formed by the elements of sand, wind and water that forms in unique rosette or petal like crystal habits. Sandrose has a gentle, nurturing energy that aids in removing energy blockages and is a wonderful meditation aid. It is known by many names, such as sand rose, rose rock, selenite rose, gypsum rose, and gypsum rosettes. Desert roses are most commonly comprised of two minerals, selenite (gypsum) and/or barite. This specimen is rich, orange- brown in color that is caused by limonite inclusions with well-defined petal-like blades. There are four varieties of gypsum: Selenite which is colorless to white with a pearl-like luster. Satin spar which is a compact fibrous aggregate with a satin-like look. Alabaster that is white or slightly tinted which is a fine-grained massive material that has been used in sculpture throughout history. Sand rose or Desert Rose which are tan to reddish- brown in color with crystal-like formations that look like rose petals. The word gypsum is from the Greek work gypsos, chalk or plaster and in Old English gypsum was known as spaerstan, or "spear stone" for its crystalline projections. In Native American lore it is said that rocks were carved into flowers by their ancestors and left for future generations to know that they had been there.
